What are Negotiation Skills?

 

To really understand this first you need to look at what the word 'negotiation' means. The definition of the word 'negotiation' is a dialogue between two or more people or parties who wish to; resolve a difference of opinion, reach a mutual understanding, agree upon a course of action and to bargain for an advantage. Basically you are looking for ways to settle your differences.

 

The reason you want to negotiate with someone is so that both parties can find a suitable solution. Otherwise disputes and arguments may arise that can harm relationships permanently. Neither person is going to be in charge of the negotiation. You must be prepared to discuss your differences no matter what they are, and then find a common ground.
 
The best way to negotiate is to prepare for it in advance. This way you are going to get a much better outcome. If you start negotiating on the spot you are more likely to run into issues and ending up arguing more than negotiating.

 

While you may tend to think of negotiation skills when it comes to businesses and corporations. You do, in fact, negotiate on a regular basis.

 

Have you ever tried to haggle for a better price on a product? This is negotiating. When you buy a new vehicle you are expected to negotiate on the price.

 

Even small children try to negotiate on things like bed time, going to a friend's house and when to get their chores done. This type of negotiating is done on the spur of the moment in an attempt to stall for time or to put off doing something.

 

Quite often you may be prepared to negotiate for a lengthy time period and are shocked when your terms are agreed upon almost immediately. It never hurts to try and negotiate for something, you don't know all the details of what the other person is thinking.

 

In certain situations it takes confidence to negotiate for something. Whether it is a better rate on a hotel booking or a discount on a new fridge or freezer.
